Summer might seem a while off just yet, but if you’re looking for activities for kids in Edinburgh during the summer school holidays our Summer ‘not’ School is the perfect activity.
Our popular and successful summer programs are for young people aged 7-13 and set right in the heart of Holyrood Park. The week-long programs offer children the chance to learn all about the park’s past, present and future through an engaging mix of outdoor activities, scientific investigation, practical conservation, team games and more.
Summer ‘Not’ School has two age groups. Young Explorers is for children aged 7-9 and this popular program will run twice – 17-21 July and 7-11 August 2017. The Outdoor Academy, for 10-13-year-olds, runs from 24-28 July.
Young Explorers will discover Holyrood Park and map their adventures. They will create an environmental art attack and investigate wildlife in the park, explore the changing weather and take part in conservation activities.
The Outdoor Academy teams up with the John Muir Trust and offers young people the chance to work towards their John Muir Award, taking on the four challenges this encompasses. These are discovering a wild place, exploring its wildness, doing something to conserve it, and sharing experiences. The Outdoor Academy also ventures further afield to explore a new wild place – Newhailes estate in Musselburgh – with the National Trust for Scotland Rangers.
The core activities of all programs run between 10am and 4.30pm. Early drop off can be made from 8.30am and young people must be picked up by 5.30pm. The cost for the 5 days is £165
These exciting activities will mostly take place outdoors, so children will need appropriate clothing and footwear to keep them warm and dry in all weathers. We’d like to say the sun will shine every day, but this is Scotland after all! A packed lunch will be required, and we will provide drinks and snacks.
With just 20 places on each program, space is extremely limited so please book soon to avoid disappointment. Once you have completed and returned the booking form, and made a non-refundable deposit of £40, confirmation of your place will be made.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
