Cameron’s Favourite Websites
United States Geological Survey
http://www.usgs.gov/
A great resource for information regarding Volcanism and Seismic activity from around the planet. The website contains any late and breaking news of seismic events from around the globe as well as information on a wide variety of topics from across the sciences. See bellow for their mission statement.
“As an unbiased, multi-disciplinary science organization that focuses on biology, geography, geology, geospatial information, and water, we are dedicated to the timely, relevant, and impartial study of the landscape, our natural resources, and the natural hazards that threaten us.”
Furthermore USGS can also be used as a portal to other web sources as it only links to scientifically credible sites. For example, due to the recent eruption of Mount Redoubt in Alaska, USGS links directly to Alaska Volcano Observatory which has up-to-date information on the eruption as well as numerous images of staggering quality taken as recently as yesterday!
New Scientist
http://www.newscientist.com/
This website can prove to be a goldmine of information for recent and topical scientific subjects. Access to many of their articles is possible without subscription. However, potentially more valuable is access to their many feature and often lengthy reports. For example “Evolution: 24 myths and misconceptions” proved invaluable for my personal understanding of Evolutionary theory.
IAN image and Video Library
http://ian.umces.edu/imagelibrary/
This website is a collection of images for use in science communication and is completely free to access providing you register (also free). I have found this a very useful website to check when looking for a very specific type of image. The galleries also include a very useful section of Arial and Satellite pictures. With over 2500 files there is a lot of potential here and in general the quality and resolution of the images is top notch.
