Summer holiday activities for children in Edinburgh

With the Easter school holidays behind us now, there’s just one short term to go before the long summer break.

Where does the time go?

We know how tricky it can be to find things for the kids to do for seven weeks so, if you’re looking for something different to occupy the kids during the holidays, take a look at our Summer (not) School.

What’s involved?

We offer two week-long programs for children aged 7-13 in the great outdoors of Holyrood Park, a wonderful wild space right in the heart of Edinburgh.

Spending as much time as possible in the great outdoors, our young explorers will take part in a mix of activities, scientific investigations, practical conservation, team games and much more.

Kids will discover bugs, beasties and butterflies, investigate habitats and who lives where, adventure up Arthur’s Seat and take on navigation challenges.

We have teamed up with the John Muir Trust, and our activities support their aim of protecting wild places and reconnecting people with nature. You can find out more about what they do here.

By taking part in our programme, young people will have the opportunity to take part in the John Muir Award, taking on four challenges to achieve the Discovery level - discovering a wild place, exploring its wildness, doing something to conserve it and sharing their experiences.

Program details

  • Young Explorers (aged 7-9) runs July 18-22
  • Outdoor Academy (aged 10-13) runs August 1-5
  • Activities will run from 10am-4.30pm, Monday-Friday
  • Early drop off can be made from 8.30am, and children must be picked up by 5.30pm
  • The cost is £165 for the five days - book before April 29 to take advantage of our early bird booking rate of £145

What will we need to bring?

We hope the weather will be sunny and dry. However, because the majority of the activities will take place outdoors, participants will need to have appropriate clothing and footwear to keep them warm and dry in all weathers. Best advice is to be prepared - this is Scotland after all!

Kids will need a packed lunch, but we will provide drinks and snacks.

How do I book?

To book a place, download and complete the booking form at the bottom of the  on our site. We will also need a non-refundable deposit of £40 which can be made in person or over the phone. We will confirm your place once the form and deposit have been received.

You can also book a place or get more information by calling Anna Danby on 0131 523 1207 or emailing

The balance should be paid on the first day of the program.

What parents said about last year’s program

‘By far the best thing they’ve done in the holidays’
‘The staff were incredible - their enthusiasm, friendliness, keenness and boundless energy far surpass other holidays clubs’
‘It was brilliant. My wife wants to come next time!’
‘It was thoroughly charming and interesting, by far the best thing they’ve done in the holidays’
‘I especially appreciated the early drop-off and later pick-up times before and after’

Shucks. We’re thrilled with those comments and we can’t wait to welcome this year’s kids to Summer (not) School. We look forward to meeting you!
