Summer Space-Tacular!

We’re all set for a space-tacular summer here at Dynamic Earth, with lots of fun activities for the kids (and the big kids!) during the school holidays. We hope you’ll join us for some of our events, running from 10am to 4.30pm every day of the holidays, and free with entry to Dynamic Earth.

With Space as our theme, our activities will ignite the imagination of your little rockets - from science to crafts, Lego robots to face paints. We’ve got plenty of hands-on experiments and take-home projects to inspire and excite.

Take a look at the ‘what’s on’ guide to see our full programme of events, and read on below to find out more about each of the activities.

Life in Space

We’ve all been gripped by Tim Peake’s story, and now that he’s back on Earth, we look forward to finding out more about his space adventures. Do you have what it takes to become an astronaut? Join us to find out! Astronauts train for years to be ready to live and work in space, and the hard work doesn’t stop when they get there. Take part in our challenges and discover some of the gruesome but fascinating things that can happen to the human body when we leave planet Earth behind.

Explore rocket science with our interactive activities and learn about some of the technology that makes spaceflight possible. You can also make your own rocket to take away - we’ll provide everything you need and you can even test it out with our rocket launchers!

Green Screen

Dress up as an astronaut and get your picture taken on-board the International Space Station, or on top of planet Earth, using our special green screen technology. We’ll provide the costumes, you provide the smiles! We’ll share these with you on Facebook too, so you can show your friends the amazing photos of your ‘adventure’ in outer space!

Family Space Adventure

At our space storytelling hub we’ve got comfy bean bags and mats so you can settle down and check out our library of space-themed books. Check out our ‘what’s on’ guide to find out which days we’re running our interactive family space adventure, where we’ll discover how humans make their way into space and explore life on the International Space Station.

Face Painting

Wednesday is face painting day - come along and be transformed into an astronaut or maybe even an extra-terrestrial from the farthest reaches of the universe...

This popular crafting activity is back by popular demand. Make a space-themed felt astronaut, rocket or perhaps planet Earth - anything your imagination dreams up!

Meet the Experts

We’ll be hosting experts from the Open University and Heriot Watt University throughout the summer. Come along and chat with the academics and find out more about what they do. Heriot Watt are hosting a conference with us from 20-22nd of July entitled Living Machines, which focuses on Biomimicry. On the 21st they’ll be demonstrating some robotics for our guests with an interactive display. On the 12th and 13th August, the Open University will have a wide range of educational and interactive exhibits open to the public.

To complement the Heriot Watt conference, we’ll be offering drop-in activities for guests focussing on robotics in space. Become Iron Man for a spell as you take the chance to control a robotic arm, or have a go at engineering some Lego robots.

 Cosmos Planetarium

Embark on an exciting virtual tour of the night sky as we host the Cosmos Planetarium on several dates this summer - check with us to find out when!

Astronaut Training

Have you got what it takes to make it in space? Complete a series of simulated astronaut mission training challenges to find out. And take a closer look at the space toilet - after all, ‘how do astronauts pee in space’ is the question everyone wants answered, right?!

Fringe Posters

See the vibrant world of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe through the eyes of Scottish school children at this free exhibition of entries from the 2016 Fringe Schools Poster Competition. It showcases the creativity of children from every corner of the country and celebrates the diversity and excitement of the Fringe.

Phew! There’s so much going on this summer at Dynamic Earth. We look forward to seeing you soon for some fantastic, space-tacular fun!

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or need further information.
