How to plan your school trip at Dynamic Earth

We love a school trip here at Dynamic Earth. There’s nothing like seeing a troop of pupils motivated and inspired by the story of our planet.

As a charitable trust, we are able to provide a fully integrated education service which is closely aligned to the needs of schools. From workshops to outdoor learning adventures, all of our activities are designed around the Curriculum for Excellence, and we can tailor your visit to all students, from age 3 to 18.

Choose from a combination of tour, workshop, ShowDome and/or outdoor activity to create a flexible, bespoke programme that suits your needs, from as little as £2.95 per pupil. Here are the options:

Take the tour

Beginning your journey in the company of James Hutton and other geological detectives from the past (with just a touch of Harry Potter magic), you’ll move through our galleries witnessing the creation of Earth, following our planet as it evolves from an inhospitable toxic ball to the create the amazing life-filled place we call home. Featuring interactive exhibits and a 3D movie experience, there is lots to grab the imagination of pupils of all ages.

Grab a seat in the ShowDome

In our state-of-the-art 360 ShowDome we host a range of films throughout the year, including We Are Stars, Supervolcanoes, Mission: Space and We Are Aliens. These immersive movies last for around 25 minutes and are shown every hour and half hour. Find out what’s on.

Plan a workshop

Our workshops meet specific Curriculum of Excellence experiences and outcomes across a broad range of Science, Social Studies, Health and Wellbeing and Technical subjects. They are led by highly qualified science communication professionals and experienced outdoor leaders.

Our Early Years and Primary programme actively engages young children with opportunities for interdisciplinary learning with well-planned investigative workshops and story-telling activities.

Meanwhile, our Secondary school programme celebrates cooperative learning and critical thinking, providing opportunities for learner to think and discuss among their peers, talk together, analyse and solve problems.

Outdoor Learning

Overlooking Dynamic Earth is the extinct volcano of Arthur’s Seat, with its crags and rare flora. It’s the perfect backdrop for all that we do and the perfect place for pupils to safely explore Environmental Sciences in the great outdoors. Our relevant, challenging and engaging activities are closely linked to the curriculum and provide a structured and managed opportunity for young people to experience hands-on investigations in the wild.

Continued Professional Development (CPD)

It’s not just about the pupils! We also offer the opportunity for you to develop or just refresh your own skills. Classroom-based activities can be delivered either at Dynamic Earth or in your school. Workshops last for two hours, and minimum numbers apply. Read more about these sessions here.

Educational visit prices

Choose from a combination of activities to suit your needs and the time you have. The prices are as follows:

1 activity: £2.95 per pupil
2 activities: £5 per pupil
3 activities: £6.50 per pupils

Check out our subsidies section too in case we can help with the cost of your visit through our transport subsidy (Scotland only). From time to time we trial new activities and these are free to the participating school. We also have special fully funded events too, so please contact us to see if these are available.

We value the time and effort you have put into organising an educational visit, so we hope you’ll take advantage of the free tea/coffee voucher for all teachers, or even the 10% discount in the cafe.

We can also provide space for your party to eat a packed lunch.

• Workshops last from 45 minutes for storytelling to two hours for Let’s Talk, although most workshops last 50 minutes
• We recommend around 1 ½ hours for the tour
• ShowDome films last 25 minutes and are shown on the hour and half hour

Teacher to pupil ratios

We require teacher to pupil ratios as follows:

• Early Years: 1 teacher: 5 children
• Primary School: 1 teacher: 10 children
• Secondary School: 1 teacher: 15 children

Entry for teachers falling within this ratio is complimentary. If your local authority ratio differs from this please advise on booking. All carers are complimentary.

How to book

To book a trip, simply contact with your preferred date, time and school name and arrange a call to discuss your requirements.

If you’re still unsure whether a visit is for you and your pupils, all teachers are entitled to a free familiarisation visit to allow you to experience the centre for yourself. Contact Chris to arrange.

If you’d like any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Call the centre on 0131 550 7800 any time. You can also download our education brochure here for further information.

To help you prepare for you visit we have put together support packs, which you can find out more about here.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!
