Did you know, aside from being a five-star visitor attraction, we’re also a charitable trust with an education programme at the core of our mission?
We provide structured, inspected and highly recommended workshops for pupils of all ages - indoors and out - linked to the Curriculum for Excellence and supported by our 14 multi-sensory galleries and Scotland’s only 360 degree Dome Film experience.
We offer a core programme for pupils from 3-18 as well as special events throughout the year including lively events focused on careers in science and an outreach programme which delivers to festivals all over Scotland.
And we don’t just cater to students. We also offer professional development for teachers, as well as financial support and transport subsidies for many schools.
How to plan your visit with us
We’d love to welcome you to Dynamic Earth this school year. So, how do you plan a visit?
You can design your own experience by selecting a choice of workshop, gallery and/or ShowDome experience. You can see the full range here. Our dedicated group booking officers will help you timetable a visit with your choice of one, two or three of the following:
Workshop: Choose from over 20 curriculum-linked indoor or outdoor workshops that meet specific experiences and outcomes across a range of science, social studies, health and wellbeing and technology topics. The recommended time for indoor workshops is 55 minutes (unless otherwise stated) and 120 minutes for outdoor learning. In June we offer a range of special workshops that last 40 minutes, at a reduced cost.
Gallery experience: For an interdisciplinary encounter, choose our gallery self-guided tour (recommended time 90 minutes).
ShowDome: Throughout the year, our ShowDome presents a range of immersive and dramatic films, linked to the curriculum, from Supervolcanoes to We Are Stars (30 minutes).
How much does it cost?
You can choose how many activities you want, and the price is as follows:
1 activity - £2.95 per pupil
2 activities - £5 per pupil
3 activities - £6.50 per pupil
June specials cost £1.50 per pupil
Outdoor learning £5 per pupil
Remember to ask us about our transport subsidy as we may be able to assist with the cost of your bus, ferry or train. You can find out more here.
What topics do we cover?
From weather and the water cycle to dinosaurs, space, Scotland’s past, the polar regions, rainforests and recycling, our indoor activities cover topics across the curriculum, providing opportunities to reinforce teaching and also for interdisciplinary learning.
Our outdoor programme gives children the opportunity to enjoy the experience of learning in the great outdoors in a safe, structured and managed environment. With the extinct volcano of Arthur’s Seat as our backdrop, we have the perfect setting to discover the geological history of Scotland, explore Holyrood Park for wildlife and habitats as well as discussing the impact recycling and reusing can have on our ecosystems.
Read our brochure to see the full range and how these are adapted for pupils at each level, from storytelling for early years to critical thinking at secondary level.
Professional learning for teachers
We offer you the opportunity to develop or refresh your own skills. Classroom-based activities can be delivered either at Dynamic Earth or in your school.
Explore the importance of creativity within the sciences, or the power of communication and presentation. Our interactive workshops will provide you with a collection of engaging activities to take back to the classroom.
We’ve also worked closely with practising teachers to develop a range of free online educational resources for use in the classroom, school, community hall or playground. All of these activities are tied closely to Curriculum for Excellence but have relevance across all curriculums in the UK.
Throughout the year, the Learning Service runs a number of special events and engagement activities. Check the what’s on guide for up-to-date information, but here’s a taster of what’s on offer for schools, families and community groups:
Careers Day, December: Showcasing quirky and inspirational jobs in science, we have real people telling your pupils all about their jobs and how they found them.
Community Programme: This has been designed with those working outside a school environment in mind from adult groups to Scouts and Guides, or young people at risk. Subsidies may be available. Call us for a chat or email firstname.lastname@example.org
We will also be travelling across the country to more remote regions with Dynamic Earth on the Road, so look out for us at Orkney International Science Festival, Caithness International Science Festival and Shetland Nature Festival.
