We are delighted to be taking part the 2018 UN World Environment Day, with this year’s theme being “Beat Plastic Pollution”. This is a hugely important issue in today’s world and is certainly something that everyone is becoming a lot more aware of, as it affects our wildlife, environments and natural places. Every year, more than 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans, and if this current trend continues, there will be more plastic than fish in the seas by 2050.
Launched in 1974, World Environment Day is now a global platform and is celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide – this year’s host is India, to reflect this country’s emergence as a global environmental leader. There are various events taking place all around the world to raise awareness of the issue and educate people on the causes and effect of plastic pollution. World Environment Day 2018 is an opportunity for us all to consider our consumption of single-use plastics, and see how we can change our ways.
As saving our planet is at the forefront of Dynamic Earth’s mission, we naturally wanted to get involved! A large team of staff members have volunteered to participate in a mass litter pick-up around Dynamic Earth and in Holyrood Park. We will use the Literati App to log what is found, where we found it and how much was collected. It is then geo-tagged, which helps to identify problem areas and highlights what the most commonly found items and brands are. Litterati can then use this data to work with these companies and find a more environmentally friendly solution to the problem. Our Café Team will focus on highlighting our Veg-Ware range of compostable coffee cups and straws and promoting our very own reusable Dynamic Earth coffee cups. All plastic drinks bottles in our fridges will also be replaced with recyclable cans for the day.
We hope that our efforts at Dynamic Earth will help make a difference to a much larger issue – and there are so many other things that we can all do to try and cut down plastic pollution. You can bring your own shopping bags to the supermarket. Refuse plastic straws and cutlery in restaurants. Bring your own refillable coffee cup to work. Next time you are out walking in our natural environments or on our beaches, pick up any litter or plastic waste you see. And always remember - if you can’t re-use it, refuse it! We believe that by making small changes in our everyday lives, we can all come together to help make big changes to our planet.
