Awesome Autumn Activities for October Half Term!

The days are getting colder and the nights are drawing in – but that won’t stop us having fun here at Dynamic Earth!  Come and join us for some awesome autumn activities during the October School Holidays - we have lots of fun for the whole family to chase those rainy day blues away.

First up, we have the launch of Alex Ingle’s stunning photography exhibition which documents the stories, images and adventures of research scientists on the glaciers of Greenland.  The exhibition will be displayed throughout the holidays and as part of the launch on Saturday 13th October, we also have a ‘Meet the Glaciologists’ event, with experts from the University of Liverpool and the University of Edinburgh.  You can find out what life as a research scientist is really like, and how they are examining the ice sheets of Greenland using a unique combination of geothermal technology, marine biology and the archaeology of Old Norse settlements.

Throughout the holidays, you’ll have a final opportunity to experience our ‘Operation Earth’ programme, run in conjunction with the Natural Environment Research Council.  You can investigate our air, land and seas as a trainee environmental scientist and see if you can help figure out ways to help our planet feel better.  There will be lots of interactive, hands-on activities - search for wildlife in our indoor meadow, check out the microscopic world or take to the sky using drone flight simulator software!

We have even more experts for you to meet later in the week – on the 18th & 19th of October you will have a chance to explore how air pollution in our environment can affect you and your health.  Do you have lots of puff?  Take a deep breath and find out with scientists from the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.  Get hands-on and have a go at measuring your lung function, learn how we catch pollutants in the air and explore how we can use this data to produce air quality forecasts.

Ever wanted to learn more about the beautiful gems and minerals found on our planet?  This October week we will also be joined by our special guests from the Scottish Mineral & Lapidary club, who will have lots of fascinating displays, demonstrations and hands-on activities for you to participate in.

Our brand new activity for 2018 - “Designosaur” - is also back by popular demand!  If you missed it’s ‘roarsome’ appearance in the summer, then now is your chance to have a go at designing your very own Jurassic creation!  Choose everything from its size and skin colour, to its patterns and camouflage.  Your personalised dinosaur will then be brought to life before your very eyes using clever ‘mixed reality’ technology.  You can even snap a selfie with your Dino in the Snap Zone!  But be quick, before you turn into its lunch….!

All these drop-in activities are free with admission, and run from 10:00-16:00 each day.  It’s set to be a jam-packed October half-term here at Dynamic Earth – see our “What’s On” guide and get planning your visit!
