We are so excited to be hosting the Festival of Physics 2018 – a celebration of all things science, and a chance for curious minds to find out more about the inventions and discoveries that have shaped our past, present and future.
Join us at Dynamic Earth for a packed three day programme, running from the 26th to 28th October. You can take part in an array of awesome events and hand-on workshops, plus scintillating lectures and inspiring talks! Creative conversation from the worlds of music, art and theatre will inspire and delight you, and offer some surprising new ways to think about science!
While physics is the focus, the Festival moves away from what many would class as ‘traditional’ science, with events including poetry, pub quizzes, creative cooking, Harry Potter-style potion classes, chocolate experiments and even a ceilidh!
The theme of the 2018 Festival is “Time” so we also have various local scientists with us, exploring the concept of time through astronomy. You can get your portrait photo taken at the speed of light; participate in colour experiments or play a quantum space computer game; you can even view a beautiful 360 degree film “Star Maker” in our surround-sound Showdome planetarium.
The Festival of Physics will run from 10am until 5pm, Friday 26th to Sunday 28th October, with four special evening events taking place on the Friday and Saturday nights. There’s something for everyone – just check out our “What’s On Guide” for the full programme, and get planning! All of the family events are FREE to attend, however due to limited spaces, there is a £3 charge for the evening ticketed events. All the other adult programme events are free.
To finish off a jam-packed weekend of fun and physics, we have something dark….really dark…
Yes – you guessed it - we’re showcasing Dark Matter research! Planets, stars, asteroids, galaxies – the things that we can actually see – make up less than 5% of the total universe. Research suggests that a large proportion of the rest of the universe is composed of strange and mysterious substances known as ‘dark matter’ or ‘dark energy’. Come along on Monday 29th October and you too can find out more about the cutting edge research that scientists are exploring…. See a model of an underground mine where the hunt is underway and a mine safety suit worn by researchers to keep them safe 1km underground. Take a look at models of some of the best detectors around and speak with researchers working in this exciting area of science right now.
From the heart of the atom to the edge of the universe; from space time to stardust, we have it all at Dynamic Earth this October – so come along and join the fun!
