Delve into the Deep at Dynamic Earth this Easter!

Woohoo – it’s the holidays!!  We are really excited for the Easter break this year as we have a jam-packed programme of events lined up for you.  Delve into the deep with our exciting ocean-themed activities - from exploring the sea bed with robots to joining the fight against ocean plastic pollution, there is truly something for the whole family to enjoy!  Come along to Dynamic Earth from the 6th – 22nd April and take part in all our additional super science events, running as part of the Edinburgh Science Festival.  And all our day-time activities are FREE with your admission ticket!

Families can take part in some exciting “Atlantic Adventures” - get hands-on with watery experiments and play with real & virtual underwater robots to find out more about how scientists in the ATLAS project learn about our oceans.  Our “Aliens of the Deep” event in conjunction with the Marine Conservation Society, seeks to discover more about the weird and wonderful creatures living within the depths of our oceans – find out how they have adapted to survive these extreme conditions!

And you don’t need to go all the way to Australia to see coral! At our “Revealing Scotland’s Cold Water Coral Reefs”  event, with scientists from the University of Edinburgh, families can check out real reef samples from right here in Scotland! And don’t forget to bring a clean glass jar to make your very own crafty coral creation to take away!

We will also be looking at our oceans from a different perspective with a visit from Julia Barton - an artist who explores our use of plastic and the amount of energy that is wasted through its careless disposal.  Her work is a unique and creative way of raising awareness of this global issue, and how we can combat the problem of litter on beaches and in our oceansAnd speaking of art – the exhibition “Shore: How We See the Sea” culminates at Dynamic Earth with a family-friendly festival of voices, creative responses and images.  This is a touring arts and marine science project of new work from Scotland-based filmmakers Margaret Salmon and Ed Webb-Ingall which aims to inspire, explore and share coastal communities' responses to Marine Protected Areas.

You can also find out more about the SCRAPbook project (Scotland's Coastal Rubbish using Aerial Photography). Meet pilots who are joining the fight against plastic pollution and help classify different amounts of litter. Discover how this will help target beach cleans and hear from the Marine Conservation Society as they share how this information is vital to their work.

Geology fans will also want to keep the 16th April free, as Professor Iain Stewart (presenter of the BBC’s The Power of the Planet) will be at Dynamic Earth exploring the geological underworld. In the morning, families can discover the uses of different types of rock and minerals, and even make their own Earthquake during our “Delving into Deep Earth” activity!

The 22nd April is another date for your diary – we will be celebrating Earth Day!  We are running a whole host of fun, drop-in activities focused on how we can all do our bit to protect our amazing planet.

We also have a range of ticketed events happening over the next couple of weeks– everything from guided walks in Holyrood Park, learning about Edinburgh’s explosive history (“The Volcanoes that Rocked Edinburgh” with expert geologist Angus Miller) and an evening talk with the BBC presenter Professor Iain Stewart.  "Communicating the Hidden Commons" is a presentation which explores our understanding of the geological subsurface & natural resources beneath our feet, and how we can manage this sustainably.  Our “Dome Nights” events are also taking place again on various evenings this April, with the return of Dark Side of the Moon, Sonic Vision and Planets 360’.  It’s a musical journey you’ll never forget!

Phew!  That’s a whole lot of fun to be had!  Our Easter extravaganza begins tomorrow – the 6th of April - so check out our “What’s On” guide to plan your visit, and find out which activities are happening every day!  It’s a jam-packed, science-filled Spring spectacular and we can’t wait for you to join us!
