ATLAS is an EU funded project that aims to improve our understanding of complex deep-sea ecosystems and species. The discoveries made as part of this amazing project will help us understand what goes on in the depths of our oceans and what we should be doing to protect these incredible ecosystems.
“As the birthplace of deep-sea biology and the cradle of oceanography, the North Atlantic is the place we should know best, but only in the last 20 years have we uncovered how varied and vulnerable its deep-sea habitats really are.”
Murray Roberts, ATLAS Coordinator.
Throughout 2019, Dynamic Earth will be running family-friendly events hoping to bring the incredible, pioneering discoveries from the ATLAS project to our visitors through fun family shows, drop-in activities, meet the scientist sessions and remote and rural outreach around Scotland.
Family Science Show
Go on an Atlantic Adventure with our ATLAS team this summer. Get involved and discover how scientists explore the deepest parts of our oceans in our fun, interactive, family show. Find out why the ocean is so important, try your hand at collecting coral from the sea floor and test your balance while carrying out experiments on a wobbly research ship!
The show lasts around 30 minutes and is free with admission to Dynamic Earth.
Get hands-on with science with our interactive family drop-in activities. Become an ROV pilot and try get your name on our leader board by sampling as many deep sea vents as possible in our ROV Simulator game. Budding engineers can have a go at designing and building their very own deep sea ROV using Lego or get creative with amazing augmented reality colouring sheets! Get ready to make a splash this summer every day during July and August* at Dynamic Earth.
All activities are free with admission to Dynamic Earth and run from 10am-4:30pm.
*Except 19th-22nd July when we are running family moon-themed events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landings. For more details on this event see here.
Keep an eye on our What’s On Calendar for our full family learning programme throughout 2019.

Educational Outreach Portfolio
Using the information gathered as part of the ATLAS project, Dynamic Earth have created a range of educational resources that are available for use by educators and the public to facilitate a wider understanding of deep sea ecosystems.
The resource pack includes information sheets, kit lists, instructions and promotional materials that are free to access and download from here!
