It’s a brand new academic year, and our incredible Learning Programme is ready to launch! We think that education should be based around discovery & exploration, so we’ve created a programme that’s packed with engaging indoor and outdoor workshops, CLPL for teachers and lots more - all designed to inspire your pupils and complement your experience at the Dynamic Earth attraction.
We offer three activities to Schools & Education groups: our Attraction Tour, ShowDome, and Workshops – you can mix & match these activities depending on your time & requirements.
Attraction Tour (90 minutes)
You will start your journey by travelling back to the beginning of time to witness the Big Bang, explore how the Earth was formed and shaped over millions of years, and travel through the different biomes of our planet. Enter 13 interactive and fully immersive galleries which will explore different stages in the journey of Planet Earth. Some areas are guided and some are self-guided so you are free to explore at your own pace.
ShowDome (30 minutes)
Packed with stunning high-definition 360° digital fulldome technology and explosive surround-sound, our ShowDome invites you into an immersive cinema experience like no other. We show a variety of films throughout the day, check our timetable for more information!
Workshops (60-120 minutes)
We’ve made sure to cover a wide range of subjects in our workshops – everything from space, volcanoes & natural disasters, to topical science workshops like Climate change and Plastic Smart. Our exciting Learning Experience is linked to the Curriculum for Excellence and all our workshops are led by experienced, highly qualified science communication professionals.
For early years and primary schools, workshops focus on interdisciplinary topical learning and storytelling activities, helping little ones to understand science, space and the big wide world!
Our secondary school workshops celebrate cooperation and critical thinking, with a focus on digital learning, which encourages our future young adults to analyse, question and solve the big issues surrounding our planet.
We are also lucky enough to be located in one of the most stunning green areas of Edinburgh – Holyrood Park! Being right at the foot of an extinct volcano offers us the unique opportunity to bring the classroom outdoors. Pupils can explore Arthur’s Seat and the natural environment surrounding it - from weather and wildlife, to geology and field skills, we cover it all! We love to inspire adventure in young people, and at Dynamic Earth, we’re all about embracing outdoor learning and giving young people the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in a safe, structured environment.
In February 2020 we also will be hosting our annual Careers Show Case, with this year’s theme being “Destination Space” – we will be focussing on the exciting career path your pupils could follow in this expanding industry. Keep an eye on the Learning section of our website for more details and how to reserve your space, as this ever-popular event will book out quickly.
And our Learning Programme is not just for the pupils! Teachers & staff can also come along to our many CLPL events running throughout the academic year. Expand and develop your own skills at one of our indoor or outdoor workshops, and enquire for more details on our other helpful resources to support your Continued Professional Development. Also launching this year are our online CLPL courses – watch this space for more details, and find out how to sign up!
