Awesome Autumn Activities at Dynamic Earth!

Dynamic Earth has a whole lot more for you to explore this autumn - between the 12–20th October you can join us on a voyage of discovery, and journey from the deepest depths of the oceans into outer space and beyond...  Come along and check out all our fun and free family drop-in events!  We have an amazing array of autumn activities to excite & inspire visitors of all ages - AND we are also running our extra-special Annual Explorer Pass offer too!

First of all, we have the Marine Conservation Society joining us from the 12-14th October – find out all about the real-life ‘Aliens of the Deep’ in our wild workshops running at 10am, 12pm and 2pm daily. You can see for yourself how weird and wonderful deep-sea animals adapt to survive in the depths of the ocean – you can even get creative and design your very own “alien of the deep”!  Workshops are free with your admission to Dynamic Earth but spaces are limited, so make sure to sign up on arrival!

Aliens of the Deep

Another event which is not to be missed is our interactive talk Science behind the Blue Planet” , taking place on the evening of 14th October.  This panel debate features the academic team who are working on the BBC and The Open University co-production Blue Planet II – the TV series that has inspired the nation, and massively raised awareness of the plight of our oceans.  The talk uses stunning video footage from the show, and guests will also have the opportunity to ask the team questions about their experience.

We will also be hosting another evening event on the 15th October with Professor Monica Grady who is a Professor of Planetary and Space Science at The Open University.   She is most well known for her work on meteorites and she even has an asteroid named after her!  “1969 and all that” explores the staggering scientific developments in the 50 years since humans voyaged to the Moon and the Open University was born. Expect to be informed, thrilled and entertained!

The Open University are also on-hand during the day on the 15-16th October in our “Meet the Scientists” Showcase event!  Come along and chat to academic and student scientists who are involved in BBC broadcasts, find out what they do and how exactly they do it.  Discover the space robots used to explore comets and the planets of our solar system.  Try your hand at being an Ocean Explorer or Food Scientist – you can even get involved in some citizen science with the iSpot nature program or Treezilla research project!

Public Talk: Science Behind the Blue Planet

Then from the 17–20th October we will be blasting off for four days of exciting interstellar activities as part of our popular ‘Destination Moon’ programme, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landings.  Keen space explorers can watch explosive rocket launches, zoom across the lunar surface on a VR moon buggy and even create their own astronaut mission patch badge to take home. The weekend offers a wonderful opportunity to learn (or revisit!) the epic story of humanity’s first voyage to the Moon, through interactive and fun family activities and demos.  Make sure you catch our latest Show Dome movie “Cap Com Go!” while you’re here as well!

Destination Moon!

And – just to top things off, we are also running our AMAZING Annual Explorer Pass offer again!  From Saturday 28th September to Sunday 3rd November 2019, anyone who visits and purchases a full price day ticket will be automatically upgraded to an annual pass so that you can enjoy a full year’s visits for free.  Now there’s an offer you can’t refuse!
