We are absolutely delighted to announce that we are reopening Dynamic Earth to the public once more, from the 8th May 2021! At the moment, we will be open every weekend and all visits should be arranged in advance via our online bookings page - we may have been temporarily closed for the last 4 months, but the team has been hard at work behind the scenes to prepare the centre for our visitors. We are all so excited to be welcoming you back - and we are back with a BANG!
When you next visit you’ll have the chance to experience our BRAND NEW 6k Digistar Planetarium, which is the only one of it’s kind in the UK! The state of the art renovations have been completed within our ShowDome - the £650 000 investment in new technology & cutting edge software now means that visitors can now immerse themselves in surround-sound, viewing fully digital 360° screens with pin-sharp 6K resolution via our upgraded high-tech projectors. It will totally transform your experience, and, in addition to our existing library of fantastic, favourite Dome films, you will also get the chance to book into one of our brand new LIVE presenter-led Planetarium shows - taking you on a tour around the galaxy and beyond!
“You Are Here” is presented by our resident astronomer and Planetarium Manager, Dr Alastair Bruce. During a lively & engaging show, visitors can expect a dramatic journey to the very edge of our solar system and back. You’ll be able to see the boundaries of human exploration and will follow in the footsteps of some very special space missions. With one of the highest quality starfields available anywhere, the planetarium has endless opportunities for bespoke shows, which will wow the audience with flight navigation through space. Our awesome new Planetarium has been supported by Leidos, The Robertson Trust, Baillie Gifford, The ScottishPower Foundation, Commsworld and other key funders and donors, and we are really looking forward to taking you all on a futuristic journey into space that you’ll never forget!
“You Are Here” presenter Alastair is an astronomer who originally trained as an actor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He began his physics and astronomy journey studying with the Open University part-time and, after graduation, embarked on a full-time PhD in astronomy at the University of Edinburgh. He considers himself very lucky to have had the chance to make astronomical observations from the island of La Palma, among the world’s best astronomical sites. On completion of his PhD, he continued working as a researcher at the Institute of Astronomy, a part of the Royal Observatory Edinburgh. During his time at the observatory, Alastair became an ever-more-active science communicator. In 2020 he jumped at the chance to begin working at Dynamic Earth to help oversee the new live Planetarium programme after the projection system upgrades.
Dynamic Earth will be open every weekend from the 8th May 2021 and tickets must be booked in advance online. All existing Annual Explorer Passes have been extended for 4 additional months to cover the time we have been closed this lockdown. Please note that you can now book the Tour and Planetarium as separate experiences, which will allow you to select which show you’d like to view in our all new & improved dome. We would recommend 90 minutes to fully enjoy your journey through the galleries in our attraction and all Planetarium shows are 30 minutes. Our teams have been very busy putting in place various new measures to ensure that all our staff and visitors feel safe & comfortable during their time with us - please read our ‘Visit with Confidence’ information before booking your tickets.
The fabulous Natural Selection Gift Shop and our Food Chain Cafe will also both be open for you to enjoy - browse our unique range of fun gifts & souvenirs, and then enjoy a tasty treat, coffee or lunch with a stunning view of the Salisbury Crags while you are here. At the moment, all attraction tickets & Planetarium time slots are limited due to current regulations - so make sure you book early to ensure you get to experience everything we have to offer! Our ever-popular Dino's Dynamos Kids Club is also be restarting soon, and bookings are now open for our Summer Outdoor Club too. So much excitement - we are not sure we can contain ourselves! The countdown is on, and we are really looking forward to seeing visitors both old & new in the VERY NEAR FUTURE!
