Climate Science Showcase - 6th November 2021

You may have heard on the news recently about a wee event that is happening in Scotland at the moment – COP26!  It kicks off in earnest this week, with world leaders meeting in Glasgow for crucial talks on the future of our planet.  And to celebrate the globally important climate conference, Dynamic Earth is hosting our very own Climate Science Showcase on Saturday 6th November - plus, as an extra special treat, we are offering HALF PRICE ENTRY to the attraction for the whole weekend too!

Just book online via our website and use the booking code NOVCOP50 to get 50% off your Tour Admission tickets at checkout! You can also get your discounted tickets on arrival at the Welcome Desk (please note that you may need to wait for a time slot if paying on the day)

Climate Science Showcase – Saturday 6th November from 10:00-16:00

Come along & meet the scientists who are at the forefront of research into our changing climate and its effects on the planet.  Teams from over 15 organisations (such as Marine Scotland, Heriot Watt University, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow) will be on hand to help you try to make sense of the climate crisis, and answer anything you ever wanted to know about COP26 and why this global event is so crucial for the future of our planet.

Visitors can drop in to this free event throughout the day and will have the opportunity to participate in all sorts of exciting, hands-on activities to explore how scientists study our planet’s climate – all the way from the bottom of the deepest oceans to the air in the atmosphere around us.

Find out more about marine life and ocean acidification with Marine Scotland.   Learn about robotic instruments which follow ocean currents and see underwater gliders & drones with the Scottish Association for Marine Sciences, then help build Dynamic Earth’s own crafty coral reef with The University of Edinburgh. The Marine Conservation Society will be on hand to discuss plastic and beach pollutants, while CEH will bring state of the art equipment to show how greenhouse gas concentrations are monitored.  Then, get involved with interactive activities with Moredun to explore and understand livestock health in their mobile lab!

As well as the Showcase activities, visitors will also have the opportunity to get up close to Gaia – Luke Jerram’s iconic artwork, as it makes its first appearance in the capital.    Depicting planet Earth as seen from space, the huge 7 metre floating sculpture is the perfect way to appreciate the beauty of our planet from all angles.  We are also delighted to have some musical entertainment for you during the day & performed underneath Gaia - with the line-up including multi award-winning Scottish musician Karien Polwart,  The Soundhouse Choir, and an artist-led social enterprise, Oi Musica, it’s the perfect fusion of science and culture!

Our Scientific Director Hermione Cockburn comments -

“We are so proud to be hosting all these fantastic organisations under one roof in Edinburgh. The Climate Science Showcase Day is the highlight of Dynamic Earth’s COP26 programme and will give visitors the opportunity to not only see and meet a collection of exhibitors who are dedicated to educating the public about the climate crisis, but also take part in fun activities. Families can get up close to some brilliant technology used to explore our world such as deep-sea landers and autonomous underwater robots.

“It’s so important for people to not only learn about our amazing planet, but also to understand that the Earth’s climate system is something we have taken for granted for too long. At Dynamic Earth we’re committed to reminding people, young and old, that we need to act now before the damage is irreversible. The scientists and exhibitors who will be on hand are incredibly knowledgeable about the changes that are happening now to our world and its climate. Whether you’re interested in learning about what COP26 aims to achieve or what individual changes we can all make to reduce our environmental footprint, it’s sure to be an interesting and inspiring day.”

The Climate Science Showcase Day is running as part of Dynamic Earth’s Operation Earth programme, a national STEM engagement scheme, connecting families with school aged children to the Natural Environment Research Council’s world-leading environmental science research.  You can come along to thfree Climate Science Showcase between 10am and 4pm on Saturday - no booking is required!  Your half price tickets for the Dynamic Earth attraction & Planetarium are bookable separately on our website - just remember to use the code NOVCOP50 for your discount.

It’s set to be an action-packed, fun filled day for all the family, and we can’t wait to see you there!
