Discover the Deep at Dynamic Earth!

The school holidays are right around the corner, and we are delighted to share our exciting Easter Extravaganza of activities with you!  There are loads of things going on at Dynamic Earth over the next few weeks, including some VERY exciting developments that we can’t wait to share with you... the opening of our new gallery, which has been 4 years in the making!!

Explore the Deep Sea in Dynamic Earth's brand-new gallery!

Come and meet Scotland's pioneers of marine science, including Edinburgh's own Charles Wyville Thomson, whose exploration of Scotland's marine environments in the 19th century launched the modern science of oceanography. Visitors can dive into the depths of the sea to witness incredible habitats and denizens of the deep including Scotland's very own cold-water reefs. When you resurface, you can meet the scientists of today and explore the equipment they use to understand and explore this massive environment so deeply connected to the health and wellbeing of us all.

The project has been in development for 4 years and has been supported by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The gallery is designed to be a fun space for our visitors to learn more about our oceans & the science we use to explore them, but also understand the threats to the survival of these habitats and wider climate change issues.  Here's a sneaky peak at what to expect in our artist's impressions!

And to celebrate the opening of our new gallery, we’re hosting a plethora of exciting themed events throughout the next few weeks, as part of the Edinburgh Science Festival! Read on for more...

From the 9th April you can come with us as we take a deep dive into the global ocean in our awesome new presenter-led show. We'll be exploring dark, hidden ecosystems and see the collective efforts of hundreds of marine scientists and engineers, striving to learn all we can about these enigmatic worlds. We'll also ponder on our ability to shape the future of this global ocean we all depend on.  Showing at various times throughout the day.

On Wednesday 13th April, you can join us on a ‘Journey to the Deep’ - an outdoor family walk, travelling 1.1km which represents the 11,000m distance to the deepest point of the ocean! There will be lots of fun activities along the way to help you gain a new appreciation of the deep and how we connect to it...

On Wednesday 20th you have the opportunity to explore Holyrood Park and learn some centuries-old boat building techniques. Then put your construction skills to the test and see if your boat will stay afloat in the pond!  All the family can join in these fun sessions - book your place on our website!

Have a wander out onto the outdoor terrace at Dynamic Earth and enjoy a fantastic free photography exhibition all about the HMS Challenger Expedition, in its 150th anniversary year, including beautiful illustrations from the ship’s original reports.  Free with admission!

If you’re feeling crafty and creative, you can enjoy our free family drop-in sessions, running every day from 10-4pm. Create an underwater landscape out of Lego, use a light box to help draw your own deep-sea creatures, and get inspired by these denizens of the deep to craft your own funky fish hat!

Planetarium Lates

Enjoy some ‘out of this world’ evening entertainment this April! Choose from exclusive extended versions of our You Are Here and Under Pressure presenter-led shows, plus Planets 360 – a spellbinding reimagining of Holst’s orchestral suite.  Kick back and relax with a drink from the bar and experience our Planetarium shows like never before! Planetarium Lates are happening Thursday-Saturday during both weeks of the Science Festival - this is an event that’s definitely not to be missed! Limited tickets available, book via our website!

Rounding off what will be a fantastic Science Festival fortnight, we have special guests joining us from Heriot-Watt and the National Museum of Scotland on Sunday 24th April for our ever-popular ‘Meet the Marine Scientists’ drop-in event. Come & chat to the experts, see some creatures up close and learn about the amazing work marine scientists are doing throughout Scotland’s oceans and beyond!
