The school holidays are upon us, and we are super excited for all the events that are taking place this week at Dynamic Earth! Come time travelling with us, and explore our exciting Fabulous Fossil February themed events – get up close to real ancient fossils, go digging for dino bones and see some 'roar-some' dinosaurs in augmented reality! Families will be able to chat about real marine fossils with our resident fossil expert, and even craft their own fossils to take home! There's so much going on, and loads more hands-on activities throughout the week.
We will be welcoming lots of special guests during the week too – this weekend, experts from the Fossil Grove Trust and the Geological Society of Glasgow will be here, come and check out their amazing display of fossils.... Chat to Dr Katie Strang and Gary Hoare, and ask them anything you ever wanted to know about these ancient relics (you can even bring your own specimens in to show us!)
Another jewel of the half term offering includes special guests from the Scottish Mineral and Lapidary Club, who will be showcasing their dazzling display of minerals and gems. They will be with us all week, from the 14-18 February, and will be on hand to answer all your questions about the traditional Scottish craft of finding, cutting and polishing agates.
Throughout February, we are also celebrating LGBT History Month, and will have a mini-exhibition on display in the centre – you can discover LGBTQ+ people who have influenced the world of Science, Technology, Maths and Engineering (STEM). The mini-exhibition will enlighten visitors about scientists who have helped to shape the understanding of the world throughout the years and how to build a more inclusive future for LGBTQ+ people working in STEM.
Our ever-popular Dinos Outdoors kids club sessions are also running during half-term – we still have limited spaces left on the 15th and 17th February. It's FREE for your children to join the best Kid's Club in town - there's loads of benefits, and they can sign up for in some outdoor adventures this February! We have 2 sessions, the first is 'Protect the Park' - kids can discover the hidden wonders of Holyrood Park, and find out why nature conservation is so important. Our second session 'Talented Trees' is all about how important trees are to our planet, and how they help us fight climate change!
Hermione Cockburn, Scientific Director at Dynamic Earth, said: “We really ‘dig’ our half term offering this year! The only way we know about prehistoric life is through fossils – so we think they’re hugely exciting and significant. We’re hoping our fossil activities inspire budding palaeontologists and aspiring geologists.
“At Dynamic Earth we’re committed to protecting the future of our planet, but it’s also so important to look back to history too. Some of these fossils have been hidden for millions of years and there’s so much to learn from the tiniest sea shell to the largest skeleton. We can’t wait to welcome families over half term.”
We are taking extra measures to ensure all our guests will feel safe & comfortable while visiting Dynamic Earth and we are part of the Visit Scotland Good To Go scheme. Please check the Visit with Confidence page on our website to find out what you can expect when you visit Dynamic Earth, whether this will be your first time or if you are a returning visitor.
There are all sorts of fun things for the family to take part in this term, and best of all, all our drop-in activities are FREE with admission to Dynamic Earth! Take a look at our What’s On Guide for all the dates and details – we can’t wait to welcome you!
