Dive in & Discover the Deep this summer!

Join us for a Summer of Discovery at Dynamic Earth!

School holidays are upon us and the sun will (hopefully!) start to make an appearance any day now!  And here at Dynamic Earth, we've been busy planning a jam-packed schedule of summer activities for you!

New Gallery – Now Open!

If you haven’t already heard (we may have been talking about it a lot!) our BRAND-NEW Discover the Deep exhibit is now open to the public!

Come and meet Scotland's pioneers of marine science, including Edinburgh's own Charles Wyville Thomson, whose exploration of Scotland's marine environments in the 19th century launched the modern science of oceanography. Visitors can dive into the depths of the sea to witness incredible habitats and denizens of the deep including Scotland's very own cold-water reefs. When you resurface, you can meet the scientists of today and explore the equipment they use to understand and explore this massive environment so deeply connected to the health and wellbeing of us all.

The project has been in development for 4 years and has been supported by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.   The gallery is designed to be a fun space for our visitors to learn more about our oceans & the science we use to explore them, but also understand the threats to the survival of these habitats and wider climate change issues.

Daily Family Drop-in Activities

Take a deep breath and dive to the bottom of the ocean with our Deep-Sea Discovery family drop-in activities! Check out our exciting new Discover the Deep gallery and then join us to carry out your own biodiversity survey of a cold-water coral reef; be inspired by the Challenger Expedition it’s discoveries & trace your own deep-sea creature to take home; use our LEGO station to create an imaginative underwater world, plus lots more exciting hands-on activities for all the family!

'Making Waves' pop-up Mini Exhibition

Thousands of meters below the waves...hidden in darkness...an underwater world teems with life. Animals adapted to the extreme pressure, freezing temperatures and lack of sunlight call this place home. In this pop-up indoor exhibition, we showcase the findings of inspiring scientists & ocean advocates, who are studying and protecting the deep-sea. There’s still so much of our ocean left to explore; maybe one day you could follow in their footsteps

Outdoor 'HMS Challenger Log' Exhibition

Have a wander out onto the outdoor terraces at Dynamic Earth and enjoy our fascinating free  exhibition all about the HMS Challenger Expedition, in its 150th anniversary year, including beautiful illustrations from the ship’s original reports.

Planetarium Lates at the Edinburgh Fringe

We’re really excited to be back as a venue for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year! Our evening shows will be on selected dates in August, and we are bringing you all new and extended editions of our awesome presenter-led Planetarium shows - Under Pressure and You Are Here!  Head to our website & get your tickets NOW as these shows are sure to sell-out!

Come with us on a dramatic journey to the very edge of our solar system and back. In real-time we'll be seeing the boundaries of human exploration and following in the footsteps of some very special space missions. Our space-cruise is a chance for some cosmic perspective in these times and also a handy wee reminder that: You. Are. Here. There will also be time to chat with our resident astronomers after the show!  (Suitable for ages 8+)

From the 9th April you can come with us as we take a deep dive into the global ocean in our awesome new presenter-led show. We'll be exploring dark, hidden ecosystems and see the collective efforts of hundreds of marine scientists and engineers, striving to learn all we can about these enigmatic worlds. We'll also ponder on our ability to shape the future of this global ocean we all depend on.  (Suitable for ages 8+)

AND – not forgetting – back by popular demand....

Inspired by the music of Pink Floyd, this dome spectacular features the 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon in explosive surround sound. With spell-binding abstract projections on the dome, audiences will be surrounded to create a truly astonishing immersive experience! Our bar will be open throughout the night so you can sit back, relax, and experience this iconic album in our Planetarium like never before...  (Adults Only)

It's all going at Dynamic Earth this summer - so take a deep breath... dive in... and Discover the Deep with us!   Check out our ‘What’s On’ Guide for all the details and how to book your tickets to visit - we can't wait to welcome you!
