Community Learning

Please check out our new and improved Dynamic Earth Online for a wealth of activities and experiments to keep you busy at home!

We believe science is something for all and we strive to make that happen!

The Learning Team here at Dynamic Earth are proud of their work with communities. Over the last few years we have been able to support many community groups in their learning, through a range of activities from tailored visits to the attraction to bespoke events and programmes. Science is something we can all be a part of and it can be a powerful tool in everyone’s development.

Our community learning programme is  varied and diverse, in the activities as well as the people involved. We have shared success through activities, celebrations and learning journeys as well as taking part in your events out in the community.

We have a dedicated Community Learning Officer who is supported by the wider team. Their job is to coordinate and develop the programme and identify opportunities for partnerships. Meaningful and effective experiences require careful planning, coordination and evaluation so that each group’s journey may take a different and best-suited course. All our projects start with a conversation  where we can learn about one another.

Science Capital is a term that describes people’s relationship with science. It provides us with a way of thinking about why and how people might engage with science learning throughout their lives. Engaging with science happens at home, at school and in everyday life and science centres can have a positive influence throughout these spaces

The Community Learning Programme aspires to create tailored activities, events and programmes that support people with low science capital, providing the skills and experiences needed to learn how to make the most of these opportunities.

Here’s what some of our groups thought this year:

‘Just wanted to let you know how much the group enjoyed the visit yesterday. All the staff we met were fantastic and so helpful. Our members ranged in age from 75 -93 and were amazed at your centre.’

“Fantastic day – learnt so much –thank you for a wonderful trip – I would not have visited here on my own"

"Amazing day trip out - would have never have thought about coming here – but its brilliant! – it’s a dreich time of year and to get out like this is fantastic"

‘I would like to thank you again for your organisation of ‘Playday with Edinburgh Young Carers.’ The day was a huge success and as a result of this experience so many things were achieved. This was a first trip to Dynamic Earth for a large number of the families and enabled Young Carers and their families to have one full day’s supported quality time together. For some of the 17 families it was the first [time] they had an ‘outing together in years’. Young Carers and their families made positive, lifelong memories together.’

"Carers were able to access this, even as we were just coming out of lockdown, and for many it was their first trip anywhere for a long time! They highly valued the personalised, safe trip."

"The sessions couldn’t have been better and all of the kids rated these 10/10."

"These workshops had such a positive impact on our group. Not only did it offer them a really enjoyable respite experience but it also made their world a bit bigger and really ignited their imaginations! The group have already asked for a return trip and it has made them really interested in engaging more in STEM."
