The Pacific nation of Tonga is waiting patiently to see if it has a new island to add to its collection of over 170! Situated in the South Pacific, the group of volcanic islands are surrounded by over 30 undersea volcanoes, one of which erupted on the 16th March 2009. A column of smoke and ash towered into the sky after a small earth tremor. At present the eruptions are not dangerous to any of the villages nearby, but some scientists believe this may be just the start with more volcanic activity to follow!
