Expedition Volcano

In this exciting and immersive coding and problem-solving workshop, your pupils will use a range of digital skills and technology to set-up, measure and analyse signals given off by our simulated volcanoes. They will programme Raspberry Pis, and use laptops and tablets to measure gas emitted by our volcanos, movement in their magma chamber and record sounds to make predictions on if our model volcanoes are ready to erupt. The programming and tech skills explored in this workshops and the sensors your pupils build are the same skills and techniques used by Volcanologists in fieldwork and expeditions, and are sure to get your pupils thinking about how technology and Earth and environmental science come together to do incredible things! Will your volcano erupt?  You will work it out!

Sciences | Planet Earth | Processes of the Planet

  • By contributing to experiments and investigations, I can develop my understanding of models of matter and can apply this to changes of state and the energy involved as they occur in nature. SCN 3-05a

Sciences | Topical Science

  • Collaborates with others to research how scientists, and those who use science in their jobs, have contributed to the development of scientific ideas SCN 3-20a

Sciences | Materials | Chemical Changes

  • I can monitor the environment by collecting and analysing samples. I can interpret the results to inform others about levels of pollution and express a considered opinion on how science can help to protect our environment. SCN 4-18a

Technologies | Digital Literacy

  • Uses the most appropriate applications and software tools to capture, create and modify text, images, sound, and video to present and collaborate. TCH 3-01a.
  • Gathers, evaluates and combines data and information from a range of sources to create a publication, presentation or information resource. TCH 3-02a

Social Studies | People, Place and Environment

  • I can explain how the interaction of physical systems shaped and continue to shape the Earth’s surface by assessing their impact on contrasting landscape types. SOC 4-07a
