Origins of Dynamic Earth

Dynamic Earth is a unique cultural and scientific learning resource. We were the first Landmark Millennium Commission funded project to fully open in the United Kingdom on the 2nd of July 1999, and we have had over 4.5 million visitors through our doors since opening.

Dynamic Earth was one of the first buildings to be designed and built as part of the City of Edinburgh’s regeneration of the Old Town following a gift of land from two companies in the Energy and Drinks sectors based near Holyrood Palace. The area around us has been transformed over the past two decades, and our distinctive white canopy next to Arthur’s Seat is now a familiar and much-loved part of the skyline.

A combination of public and private support helped us create Dynamic Earth, and like all science centres in Scotland we continue to receive funding from the Scottish government via the Office of the Chief Scientific Advisor. As we look to our 20th anniversary in 2019, we are thinking of interesting new ways to engage audiences and supporters.
