Discovering the Deep Online Talk Wednesday, 08 December 2021 07:30 PM

Our Scientific Director Hermione Cockburn is giving an online talk on December 8th as part of the RSGS Inspiring People Talks Programme.

Listen to her tell the story of Scotland’s surprisingly rich deep-sea habitats that paved the way for modern oceanography thanks to one of the most remarkable, but perhaps least known, Scottish scientists. Find out about Charles Wyville Thomson and how his pioneering work off the north and west of Scotland led to the Challenger expedition, a global endeavour that discovered over 4,000 new species and established how we understand the deep-ocean. At a time when the health of the ocean is in decline, understanding the deep-sea, its incredible ecosystems, and the critical role it plays in the future of our planet, is more important than ever.

Book your ticket via the RSGS website. Tickets are free for RSGS Members, U18s and Students, or £6 for everyone else.
